April 2021
Happy April,
Spring has sprung and I hope you are enjoying the beautiful weather that is upon us!
The mantra I am sitting with this month comes from a piece of advice given to me the day before our wedding almost seven years ago; “do not postpone joy.” This advice has stuck with me over the years and has been coming up often as I move into this new season.
In life, we tend to tell ourselves, “when I have this,” or “when I make more money,” or “when I lose weight,” that THEN I will be happy, stable, confident, and so forth. This way of thinking takes us out of the present moment and leads us to believe that exactly where we are is not good enough.
The reason the mantra “do not postpone joy” is coming up amid this season is because of the constant change and growth that spring ushers in; it’s a constant unfolding and evolution that is both new and impermanent. It can be easy and sometimes more convenient to charge forward through change or wish it away and not see the value it has on our lives. Spring helps to remind us of new possibilities that derive from dormancy as well as growth gained from the work we do, and the seeds we plant. If we become too attached to an idea of the way things “should be” or “could be,” we bypass the innate value of being truly present and miss the opportunity to be surprised or in awe of the world unfolding around us just as it is. To me, the idea of not postponing joy means to open ourselves to the wonder and possibility of what is in front of us in each moment and experience and find contentment (santosha) in all that is.
This month, I encourage you to observe when you get caught up in “should thinking” or the “when I…” mindset and see if you can rearrange your perspective to enjoy the life that is with you now; enjoy the people, the blossoming flowers, even the challenging moments because they can enrich our experience of being so fully if we give ourselves space to be present with them.
Sending fully present joy to you this month,
Margot
