Feburary 2024

In Sanskrit, there is a term Sama Vritti, translating to ‘equal fluctuations.’ This is often referred to with the practice of breath creating an equal exchange of inhalation and exhalation.

This month I have been diving into this concept of equal exchange on multiple levels. The physical/energetic practice of breath as well as the thoughts of how much we take into our minds and psychies on a mental and energetic level everyday. Think about it- we have endless information and stimulation at our fingertips coming at us through every angle of life, family, work, social media and more. We are constantly taking in, absorbing and, very often, holding onto all of this info without necessarily releasing it.

So, the questions I have posed to myself and students have been as follows: how much are you allowing yourself to take in, and how much are you allowing yourself to release? Most importantly, is it an even exchange?

On the flip side, this also relates to the amount of energy we are putting into the world, our families, work and our social lives. How much are we allowing ourselves to receive nourishment, rest and softness? In a world that demands so much production of energy, thought and activity, where is the space for non-doing, rest and reflection?

So my mantra this month is Equal Exchange.

What am I taking in? What do I not need to hold onto? What can I release?

Equal Exchange

How much am I giving? Where can I pause to receive?

And here is a little secret: you don’t need to receive from others—just creating some space for yourself for rest, yoga and sunshine, might be just what you need!

Wishing you balance and awareness this month.

Peace,

Margot
