July 2023

It really is interesting how some of the most basic, innate needs of our human nature become more challenging and foreign as we get older. Yet the basic needs for both rest and play truly lay at the center of what we need to be nourished and rejuvenated in order to live a full life.

This past week, as Breathing Room took its summer break, as did my kiddo’s daycare, I had the opportunity to rest and play. At first it was difficult, with dozens of things to do on dozens of lists; but I decided to put them aside and commit to rest and play.

Having spent the last 12 days straight with a toddler I have had some delightful insights into how play is such a natural state of our human experience. Exploration, inquiry, excitement— these are all qualities I feel slowly diminish as we get older. And I am seeing more and more how we have to intentionally reinstate these values to keep them alive and active in our lives.

It's easy to become engulfed in work and the responsibilities of adulthood, often feeling like there's no time left for play. This leaves us lacking the rest we truly need and perpetuates a cycle of being stuck in the relentless grind, aka hardcore adulting. But it doesn't have to be this way!

This month I am really leaning into creating time for play and rest and allowing for that soul nourishing time to help inform and restore balance in other areas of life. We are at the height of our daylight hours so I am looking to create more time in water, nature, with loved ones being silly and light.

I encourage you, if you are feeling the lack of play to pause, ask where you can add some in, and know you can always start on the mat with us.

Looking forward to playing together!
